This could have been Bengal’s answer to Koi… Mil Gaya. But Satabdi tries to be a Jack of all trades by trying her hand at story, direction, screenplay and
dialogue when she could have been a master by sticking to just acting. But this Abhinetri is a master in dodging comparisons with ET or a Jadoo.With a master stroke, she includes in the dialogue of the son asking his father whether his roboman will be anything like ET or Jadoo. With little or no jadoo in the storyline,
Friend is nothing more than a diluted translation of Koi Mil Gaya. Tapas Paul is Abhi, the honest scientist who gives his all to create
a roboman. His ever loving, wife Brishti (Satabdi) balances family and her belowaverage son Bobo (Rishav). Rajatava is the
shoitan scientist Rajat, who at the behest of his evil boss, kidnaps Abhirup and his creation just so he can become the master of
the universe. In true Mohra style, Soumitra does a Naseeruddin Shah when it is uncovered that the ever-enthusiastic
professor is the brain behind the kidnap. The only time the few kids at the theatre for the first day first show, broke into an
applause was when the bad guys were giving Friend and his friend, Bobo, a chase. It is still a mystery as to why Satabdi threw in the romantic track of Ridhima and Sayak. The only logical explanation seems to be that along with the kids, she wanted to keep the parents suitably entertained with some forgettable scores by
Mrinal Sen, which had the newbies shaking a leg at amusement parks and other locales.
Seriously, our kids deserve a better treat.
