Storyline:

The phrase ‘Shubho Mahurat’ is associated with the beginning of shooting for a feature film. The first day of shooting is usually marked by a grand reception, followed by a token shooting or vice-versa. This Miss Marple-esque film began with this event. An NRI producer,Padmini Choudhary (Sharmila Tagore) has come to India to invest in a film. An out-of-work director is assigned the job of direction.
The out-of-work director had a shady past. The witness to his shady past was an aspiring actor, who was subsequently thrown out of the acting circuit. Thereafter, this actor started a catering service for the film unit. The NRI producer insisted on casting a retired actress in a prominent role. The retired actress, a drug-addict, subsequently died under mysterious circumstances. The journalist Mallika Sen (Nandita Das) was the only person present at the time of the actress’ death. The suspicion naturally fell on the husband of the actress.
The husband reportedly has an amorous relationship with another lady. The unnatural death of the actress made the police come into the scene. An IPS officer took up the investigation. During the course of investigation, this IPS officer befriends the journalist. Meanwhile, the journalist caught the fancy of a still photographer, who incidentally, was closely related to the NRI producer.
This NRI producer had a past no less interesting than the other protagonists of the story. The NRI producer was an actress of repute in her heyday. She divorced her husband and left the country to settle abroad. Before that, she had given birth to an abnormal child. The course of the film revealed that she bore a grudge against an actress of her time, for supposedly spreading the contagion in her.
Another amorous affair also ran parallel to the main theme. The camera assistant was repenting for his past affair with the hair-dresser. The hair-dresser had her problems and she was extracting money very often from the camera assistant. All through the movie the aunt of the journalist, Ranga Pishima (Rakhee Gulzar) gave vital leads to the investigation through deductive logic. She was able to read the mind of the niece correctly. 1. Pablo, the son of estranged parents was the foremost in forming this band but his complex ego seemed to be the main obstacle in its evolution.
2. Baaji, a slum dweller with a brother in Sultan getting arrested for his probable links in the Bombay blast, always suffered from the complex of being a Muslim but was made wise of the aspect of religion in art by Sam in one of the most moving scenes of the film.
3. Neon’s father, an unemployed electrician and an alcoholic had a wife cherishing for a role in group theatres amid her household chores and a salaried job. Thus squabbles were the order for the day for Neon who found the only solace in strumming the base for the band when not indulging himself in drugs.
4. Benji, the most confused of the lot seemed to bring in trouble in the form of his affairs with his near adult girlfriend Joy, the daughter of a widow mother who while on the one hand was afraid of losing respect by her daughter’s misbehaviours but ironically didn’t found anything wrong in maintaining a steady relationship with an unmarried man.

Synopsis:
Two friends Arka (Hiran Chatterjee) and Dodo (Rahul Bannerjee) are great friends and as chance would have it, are also competitors and finalists in a reality show, which carries a jackpot of Rs.1 Crore. As part of the show they are asked to go into disguise for 2 nights and 3 days. So Arka becomes Jackie Gomes a driver of a tourist cab, and Dodo becomes Paltan aka Patla, a rookie police constable. While on duty Arka meets Piu Mukherjee (Koel Mullick) a girl on the search of her long lost love and not to be left behind Dodo meets Mithu Dutta (Sohini Pal), a fellow constable and Inspector Godar (Biswajit Chatterjee) who can’t resist cutting corny jokes.

Then Dame Fortune comes into play. Piu is really a girl traumatised by her past. Her lover is dead but she can’t face up to that reality. She is a patient in a mental hospital who is on the run. The police look for her and the task is assigned to No other than Patla and Mithu and their boss. What follows is a chase through the length of Bengal as the foursome go to Bolpur, Raiganj, Gorumara forests, Gorubathan, Dhupjhora, Lava and Rishabh..

Both Arka and Dodo win and share the prize, but then comes the little twist in the tale…

Comments:
I had seen Koushik Ganguly’s mildly successful “Shunno E Bukey” and hadn’t been too impressed. His later films like Waaris flopped at the box office and Ganguly was rapidly earning a reputation as a filmmaker who makes weepy “semi-intellectual” films. So when I saw this film I was pleasantly surprised.

The film is in the “Road Film” genre, and must be the first of its kind in Bengali. The screenplay is tight and the situational comedy comes out well. The four young actors exude a vitality that is very fetching. Good editing helps keep our interest intact and the music by Jeet Ganguly is in keeping with the youthful theme. If I have a grouse, it is that the last 10 minutes including those bursts of nobility from the protagonists, are completely predictable and could have been done better.

I’m also not very impressed by the camera work of Gopi Bhagat. A road film allows ample scope to bring out the beauty of the landscape but I have seen far better camera work from Riingo and others. Part of the fault also lies with the DVD and Shri Venkatesh films. The DVD had a hazy washed out look that was very disappointing.

Overall a very entertaining film. Don’t look for intellectual stimuli in this film. Stick to its basic story line and you will have fun.

Uploader’s Notes:
This is probably one of my better rips, inasmuch as I have been able to reduce much of the defects of the original DVD and am presenting to you images which a crisper and colours that are more vibrant. I would advise you to download the 1400 MB version, which is really the better of the two. If bandwidth is a constraint, go for the 700 MB rip which is perhaps about 90% of the 1400 MB rip quality…

This rip is in the fulfilment of a promise. I’m glad to have met the deadline..
